Is Powerade bad for you? Powerade is an immensely popular sports drink (similar to the equally well-known Gatorade). It is made specifically for athletes, to help ensure that their bodies have the specific nutritional elements (such as vitamins, electrolytes, and carbohydrates) they need for successful endurance.
Is Powerade Bad For You?
Powerade is not suitable for people who are sedentary and don’t exercise.
Powerade is popular with athletes for its ability to help them power through difficult challenges of endurance, and in their regular training and exercise.
It is also quite popular with non-athletes, and that is the area where it tends to be problematic. When people who are not exercising for long blocks of time (at least an hour) drinking sports drinks such as Powerade (especially habitually and/or in excessive amounts), problems such as weight gain and related health problems can result. People drink Powerade, somehow imagining that because it is popular with athletes, it must be healthy for everyone. That is not the case.
Powerade Offers Electrolytes
Electrolytes are an essential part of any person’s nutrition, but they are especially important for athletes. Electrolytes carry out a multitude of functions, including improving hydration levels, helping fluid uptake in the intestines, helping the muscles work, and maintain the balance of fluid levels. The reason why they’re especially important for athletes is because the sweating that occurs with exercise causes the body to lose electrolytes. Powerade has the electrolytes potassium (25 milligrams) and sodium (100 milligrams).
Powerade Offers Vitamins
Three B vitamins are found in Powerade. 10% of the expected daily intake of vitamins B-12, B-6, and B-3 are found in Powerade ION4 (an 8 ounce serving). B-12 is important because it is used in the creation of DNA, and it is crucial in the health of blood cells and nerves.
Problem of Excessive Carbohydrates
Excessive intake of carbohydrates (that one doesn’t fully burn off with exercise) can easily lead to weight gain and obesity. If you are exercising for a block of at least one full hour, Powerade will give you the carbohydrates you need in order to endure. Powerade offers glucose (a carbohydrate), as well as maltodextrin, a complex carbohydrate.
An intake of excessive carbohydrates on a daily basis can also lead to problems with blood sugar levels. This is especially the case with refined carboyhydrates, such as those you will find in foods like pasta and white bread.
Refined carbohydrates are digested by the body far more quickly than other carbohydrate types, and as a result they can lead to blood sugar level spikes. A result of such spikes can be that your body will release hormones that are meant to bring down your levels of blood sugar. This can cause overcompensation and a resulting crash in blood sugar. This crash can make you feel hungry again very quickly, as well as fatigued.
It is best to try to make the majority of carbohydrates in your diet come from sources such as foods with high levels of dietary fiber. Carbohydrates that come from foods with a lot of dietary fiber are helpful because the fiber is indigestible. This means that it assists with making you feel full more quickly and in keeping blood sugar under proper control. You will also find that increasing your intake of fiber will help to prevent constipation.
Keep in mind that for most people, carbohydrates should only constitute between about 45 and 65 percent of one’s daily calories. If your daily calorie intake is about 1,800, you should only be getting about 203 to 293 grams of carbohydrates.
Powerade and Weight Problems
As stated earlier, if you regularly drink Powerade but have a sedentary lifestyle, the excess calories, sugar, and carbohydrates in it are likely to lead to weight gain. The sugar is also very bad for your teeth, and can lead to dental decay.
When reading the drink labels, you should be aware that the designated serving size might be only one-third of the bottle’s contents. If you want to drink Powerade but are not an athlete, it’s extremely important that you look for and select the available low-calorie versions.
The Question of Hydration
Some people think that drinking Powerade will provide them with hydration superior to that of water. This is a mistake. If you are not an athlete exercising for blocks of 60 minutes, all the hydration you need can be achieved by drinking plain water. Plain water is also free of the excessive calories and carbohydrates that can lead to weight gain and possibly one or more of the many health problems related to obesity.
Problems Caused by Obesity
If you drink sports drinks such as Powerade (especially when you fail to choose the low-calorie versions) and you are not an athlete and/or are sedentary, you are putting yourself at risk of becoming overweight or even obese. As most of us are already aware, obesity is linked to a wide variety of worrying medical problems.
One of the many frustrating problems which tend to arise with being overweight is the vicious cycle of less exercise and more weight gain. When we are overweight, we are often more likely to avoid exercise. This is a destructive cycle that needs to be broken as soon as possible.
