Yes, Coffee Mate is bad for you. Coffee Mate has many potentially harmful ingredients, including partially dehydrogenated vegetable oil, added sugar, carrageenan, mono-and diglycerides, corn syrup solids, and phosphoric acid.
Partially Dehydrogenated Vegetable Oils
Partially dehydrogenated vegetable oils can put you at greater risk of developing heart disease. These oils contain trans fats. They are so harmful to human health that the USDA is planning to phase out their use by 2018, with exceptions only where companies can somehow prove that their use isn’t harmful.
Liquid vegetable oils become solid fat through the chemical process of hydrogenation. It is believed that trans fats are more detrimental to health than saturated fats. Trans fats increase the body’s levels of bad cholesterol and reduces the levels of good cholesterol.
It is believed that carrageenan creates a reaction of the immune system comparable to the kind created by exposure to pathogens (for example, like Salmonella). It leads to inflammation and possibly even bleeding and ulcerations, particularly in the digestive system. It is true that carrageenan is derived from a natural source.
Mono- And Diglycerides
Mono-and diglycerides are a type of food additive. They are added in order to combine ingredients that contain water with ingredients that contains fats. Mono-and diglycerides are also utilized as a preservative, as they can lengthen products’ shelf life. They are partly made of fatty acids similar to triglycerides.
Corn syrup is a liquid sweetener. It is derived from maize (corn starch). Corn syrup contains sugar and oligosaccharides, both carbohydrates.

The pancreas makes insulin, a specific hormone that allows glucose to get into your cells. - Being overweight or obese: Being overweight or obese can lead to insulin resistance. This is especially the case if you tend to carry a lot of weight in the abdominal area.
- Genes: You are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if it runs in your family.
- Metabolic syndrome: You are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you have metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome involves having high cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood pressure, extra fat in the abdominal area, and high blood glucose.
- Broken beta cells: Your blood sugar will be thrown off if the cells that make insulin in your body send out incorrect amounts of insulin at the incorrect times.
- Age: People over 45 are at the highest risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Ethnicity: People of certain ethnicities are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Some of these groups include African American, Pacific Islander-American, Hispanic or Latino, Asian-American, and Native American.
Coffee Mate is Unhealthy. Choose better options!
As we can see, Coffee Mate is not a healthy choice of creamer or whitener for your coffee. If you want to add a creamer or whitener, choose natural milk or cream. If you still want to have Coffee Mate, just make it an occasional treat.
