What is Foot Pain?
Pain that is aching, throbbing, and/or sharp in the feet is the most prominent characteristic of foot pain. There are many possible causes of foot pain, with examples including running long distances, lifting heavy weights, uncomfortable and/or high heeled shoes, and pregnancy.
Health conditions that can cause foot pain include, for example, Achilles tendonitis, arthritis, foot drop, tarsal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, mettarsalgia, and heel spur. Make sure to see your doctor or a foot specialist to determine whether you have one of these conditions.
Below is information on specific foot pain conditions:
Achilles tendonitis occurs as a result of inflammation and irritation of the large tendon running down the back of the lower leg. You use the Achilles tendon, the largest in the human body, whenever you run, walk, jump, stand on the tips of your toes, and climb stairs.
Too much strain on the Achilles tendon over time can contribute to Achilles tendinitis. Some common symptoms of this condition include: swelling that worsens with activity but is present all the time; bone spur (insertional tendinitis); thickening of the Achilles tendon; pain in the tendon the day after exercise; pain along the back of the heel or the tendon that becomes more severe with activity; and stiffness and pain in the morning.
If you’re in your 60s or 70s, there’s around a 50 percent chance that you could be suffering from foot pain caused by arthritis. Arthritis is a condition in which swelling, pain, and stiffness is caused by inflammation around or in the joints.
There are two main kinds of arthritis: inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis and other types of arthritis caused by wear and tear.
The most prevalent type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear. Over time, bones come to grind against one another, and this leads to swelling and pain. A result can be cartilage degeneration.
If you have foot drop, you have trouble lifting the front of your foot. When you’re walking, the front part of your foot might drag. Foot drop in itself isn’t a disease. Instead, it’s a symptom of an anatomical, muscular, or neurological issue. Foot drop can sometimes be permanent, although sometimes it is temporary.
Some people who have foot drop need to wear a special brace on the foot and ankle to ensure the foot is held in a normal position. There are several possible causes of foot drop, including brain and spinal cord disorders, muscle or nerve disorders, and nerve injury.
Make sure to consult your doctor to ensure that you don’t have any of these underlying conditions. If you do, you’ll probably require treatment. Some factors that are thought to increase one’s risk of developing foot drop include wearing a leg cast, prolonged kneeling, and habitually crossing your legs.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
The canal that exists between the flexor retinaculum (a ligament band that reaches across the foot) and the medial malleolus (the bump located on the inside the of ankle) is the tarsal tunnel. The foot’s flexibility and movement are allowed by the tendons, arteries, and nerves found in the tarsal tunnel.
The tibial nerve is among the tarsal tunnel nerves that allow for sensation in the bottom area of the foot. Tarsal tunnel syndrome arises when the tibial nerve is compressed. Another name for tarsal tunnel syndrome is posterior tibial neuralgia. There are several possible causes of tarsal tunnel syndrome.
These include: nerve compression caused by a bone spur, inflamed tendon, ganglion cyst, or varicose vein; swelling caused by diabetes or arthritis, and the nerve compression caused by that; or an ankle sprain that causes swelling or strain on the tibial nerve, fallen arches, or flat feet.
Some of the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome can include: a burning or tingling sensation; numbness; and shooting pain.
Plantar fasciitis is a condition affecting the connective band of tissue or ligament that runs between your heel bones and toes. The condition is caused by continued strain on this part of the foot and involves swelling and irritation. Plantar fasciitis is a common condition in elderly people.
It can be experienced by people of other ages too, though. Some of the symptoms of plantar fasciitis include pain that occurs with or after extended periods of standing or exercise; pain that becomes more severe when you stand with your weight on the toes or climb stairs; and severe “stabbing” sensations that occur near the heel.
Pain and inflammation of the ball of the foot are the characteristics of metatarsalgia. Activities such as jumping and running can make one more prone to develop this condition. Shoes that are too loose or tight and deformities of the foot can also lead to metatarsalgia.
Wearing arch supports or footwear that include shock-absorbing insoles can help with this condition. Some of the symptoms of metatarsalgia can include: a shooting or sharp pain, tingling, or numbness in the toes; pain that gets worse when you walk, flex your feet, run, or stand (especially when you are on a hard surface barefoot) and that gets better when you’re resting; burning, aching, or sharp pain in the ball of the foot; and the sensation of there being a pebble in your shoe.
A calcium deposit that causes a bony protrusion on the heel bone’s underside is a heel spur. Heel pain can be caused by heel spurs, although the condition itself can often be painfulness.
Some common treatment for heel spurs can include anti-inflammatory medications, custom-made orthotics, certain kinds of exercise, and cortisone injections.
In some cases, surgery may be required. Factors that could put you at greater risk of developing heel spurs include: being overweight or obese; wearing shoes that lack necessary arch support and/or that are badly worn or improperly fitted; jogging or running, especially when done on hard surfaces; abnormalities in walking gait that lead to too much stress on the heel bone, nerves near the heel, and ligaments.
Using Essential Oils to Alleviate Foot Pain
There are a number of essential oils that have antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, stimulant, and/or analgesic properties that can reduce the inflammation that leads to foot pain.
Some of them can also help to numb the pain and promote better blood flow. Better blood flow is helpful because it promotes healing.
Best Essential Oils for Foot Pain
- Wintergreen: Wintergreen essential oil is useful in dealing with inflammation. Additionally, it has mild numbing or analgesic properties.
- Peppermint: Peppermint offers analgesic (pain numbing) properties. It can have a stimulating effect too that can be helpful in dealing with foot pain. Peppermint oil can be especially useful to use at night before bed.
- Birch: Birch essential oil can combat the inflammation associated with foot pain. It offers detoxifying, antiarthritic, and stimulant properties. Birch oil’s main components are salicylic acid, betulene, and betulenol.
- Lemongrass: Lemongrass essential oil can be useful in addressing inflammation and pain. It has analgesic and astringent properties. Lemongrass essential oil is made by way of steam distillation of dried lemongrass. This oil’s main components are citronellal, myrcene, nerol, neral, geranyl acetate, citral, geraniol, and limonene.
- Helichrysum: If you have muscle spasms in your feet, helichrysum essential oil can be helpful. This is a mild oil, and some people like combining it with other, stronger oils.
- Vetiver: Vetiver essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and tonic properties. It is especially popular in the Indian Subcontinent. Vetiver’s botanical name is Vetiveria zizanoides or Andropogon muricatus. Vetiver essential oil has a cooling and soothing effect. It can be useful with muscular aches and pain caused by conditions such as arthritis.
- Frankincense: The anti-inflammatory and mild stimulant properties of frankincense essential oil are what make it useful for addressing foot pain.
- Basil: Basil essential oil provides anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It acts as an analgesic, meaning that it can help to alleviate pain. Basil essential oil can be useful in dealing with problems such as arthritis, sports injuries, and sprains.
- Marjoram: Marjoram is made through steam distillation of the marjoram plant’s leaves, both dried and fresh. The majoram plant is sometimes called the knotted marjoram. Its scientific name is Origanum majorane. Majoram essential oil can help to reduce pain and control spasms.
- Black pepper: Black pepper essential oil can relieve spasms and cramps, as well as alleviate arthritis pain. It also has antibacterial properties.
- Clove: Clove essential oil can help to numb your foot pain. It is believed to have anti-spasmodic properties.
- Geranium: The inflammation that might be behind your foot pain could be soothed by geranium essential oil. The aroma of this essential oil is believed to be beneficial to mental function and mood.
Here are Some of the Ways You Can Use these Essential Oils
Essential oil massage
You’ll need 10 drops of vetiver essential oil, 10 drops of helichrysum essential oil, 10 drops of birch essential oil, and 10 drops of peppermint essential oil.
If you prefer, you can substitute other essential oils of your preference from the ones we listed earlier in the article. Three tablespoons of grapeseed oil and a four-ounce glass dropper bottle are also required.
Mix all of the essential oils in the glass dropper bottle, and then shake the bottle gently to mix thoroughly. Put between five and seven drops of the mixture in the palm of one of your hands, and then rub your palms together. Massage the mixture into your foot, making sure to squeeze and knead as you go.
If you’d prefer, you can use a foot massage roller to do the massage. Do this to both feet and then put on a pair of socks before bed. This will help the mixture stay on all night, for the greatest possible benefit.
Essential oil foot soak
You’ll need five drops of marjoram, 10 drops of peppermint, 10 drops of wintergreen, one tablespoon of baking soda, a handful of Epsom salts, a foot soak tub, and hot water.
You can use other of the essential oils we’ve already listed, if you prefer. Fill the foot soak tub about halfway with hot water. Put in the essential oils, baking soda, and Epsom salts.
Stir everything together, and then put your feet in. Let your feet soak for at least about 15 minutes. If you don’t have a foot soak tub, you can use your bathtub instead.
Massage your feet with clove oil diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil). Doing so will help to relax the muscles and promote better blood flow. You can do this massage several times each day.
Other Natural Remedies for Foot Pain
Mix two tablespoons of vinegar into a tub of hot water. Add some Epsom salts or sea salt to the water. If you only have table salt, you can use that instead. Allow your feet to soak for around 20 minutes. If you don’t want to soak your feet, you can use a foot wrap instead.
To do this, mix equal amounts of water and vinegar. Make one container with hot water and another with cold water. Put a towel in the hot water and vinegar mixture.
Squeeze the towel to get rid of excess liquid, wrap it around the affected foot, and leave it on for around five minutes. After this, do the same thing with the cold towel. You can do three or four times a day.
Ice will help to reduce swelling as well as pain through causing temporary numbing of the nerve endings. Massage the affected area with crushed ice contained in a small plastic bag. You shouldn’t use ice for more than 10 minutes each time. This is because using it longer can potentially damage the nerves and skin.
It is the capsaicin in cayenne pepper that makes it effective in alleviating aches and pains, including those caused by arthritis.
Sprinkling a bit of cayenne pepper in your socks before you put them on might help if you tend to have foot pain when you get cold. Another way to use cayenne pepper powder is to add one teaspoon of it to hot water (half a bucket). Allow your feet to soak for three minutes.
Epsom salts contain a large amount of magnesium, a helpful mineral in dealing with foot pain. Mix three tablespoons of Epsom salts in warm water. This can be in a tub.
Let your feet soak in this around 15 minutes. Apply some moisturizer to your feet afterwards if your feet feel dry. You should be able to find Epsom salts at your local pharmacy.
Peppermint or chamomile tea soak
Steep four bags of chamomile or peppermint tea in boiling water (two cups). Once you’ve done this and removed the bags, pour the tea into one gallon of hot water. Make sure it’s not too hot.
Allow your feet to soak in this for about five minutes. After you’ve drained the water, put your feet under cold water from the tap, then hot water, and then cold again.
Buy shoes in the afternoon
The next time you buy a new pair of shoes, make sure to go shopping in the afternoon. This is important because feet expand as the day progresses. Trying on shoes in the afternoon will help make sure that the size you choose properly accommodates the swelling.
Remember to try on both shoes before purchasing them. If you find that your feet are slightly different in size, purchase a pair of shoes that feel most comfortable on the larger foot.
Give yourself breaks from wearing high heels
If you wear high heels, try to do so less often. High heels can quickly cause a variety of foot and leg problems. For example, they can cause the calf muscles to tighten and make the feet quickly fatigued. Wear low heels whenever possible. High heels with a thin sole and pointy toes are among the worst you can wear.
Choose shoes with thick soles
It’s better to choose shoes that have thick soles that can absorb shock. Make sure that your old shoes aren’t becoming thin or worn in the soles, as this can lead to foot pain.
For one or two minutes, roll your foot over a soup can, tennis ball, or golf ball. This can be a useful massage that can stretch and relax the foot’s arch.
Walk in place
If you are required to stand for extended periods during the day, walk in place as much as you can. Also, remember to change your stance periodically. When possible, rest one of your feet on a step or stool. If you can, stand on a spongy rubber mat or carpeting.
Put your feet up
Putting your feet can help with foot pain. When you get home after a long day, elevate your feet. If possible, make them a 45-degree angle to the body. Try to exercise your toes while the feet are elevated. This will help to promote better circulation.
Foot pain caused by running or exercise has long been addressed by the use of arnica flower extract. Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. Don’t use arnica if the skin is broken. Consult with your doctor before using this remedy if you are pregnant, as it may be hazardous.
To use arnica tincture for your feet, first soak your feet in warm water for about five minutes. Gently massage a few drops of arnica tincture on the side of your foot.
Allow it to stay on for about 10 minutes. Use lukewarm water to rinse off the tincture, and then pat dry with a towel. You can do this twice each day.
Asparagus has anti-inflammatory properties, as it can reduce the retention of fluid in your body. It can help if you have foot pain caused by edema or inflammation. Try eating steamed asparagus.
You could also make a paste out of some boiled asparagus and then apply it to the feet. You should leave this one for about 30 minutes. Use lukewarm water to remove the asparagus paste, and then gently pat your foot dry. You can do this every day.
You can use sage leaves and vinegar to help soothe your foot pain. Mix water with a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar in a bowl. Add a handful of dried sage leaves and then bring the mixture to a boil. Allow it to simmer for about five minutes.
Once it has cooled sufficiently, strain the liquid. Put a cotton cloth in the liquid, allowing it to soak. Put the cloth on the affected area of the foot. Press this on your feet for about 10 minutes. You can do this once each day.
Use some of these home remedies to alleviate your foot pain whenever needed. There are certainly many options here for you to choose from.
