The Facts About Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a common lower respiratory disease. In fact, acute bronchitis is one of the ten most common ailments among outpatients in the United States. 1 According to the data provided by the American Lung Association (ALA), chronic bronchitis affected more than 10 million Americans in 2011. 2 Majority of the cases of chronic bronchitis involved adults who are 45 years old and above.
Your bronchi (the plural form of bronchus) are two tubes that enter each lung. Their function is to carry air to your lungs. When these air passageways become inflamed, it leads to a medical condition called bronchitis.
The common signs and symptoms of bronchitis include:
- Cough (major symptom of acute bronchitis) – This is brought about by increased production of sputum (mucus from the lungs) that can range in color, from colorless to white to yellow-gray to green. The coughing could last less than two weeks, but it could also linger longer than that.
- Wheezing – This is a type of audible, continuous, and high-pitched sound that’s made while you breathe. However, you can hear it the most when you breathe out.
- Chest congestion – This refers to the feeling of heaviness or tightness in the chest. This usually happens when there’s too much mucus in your lungs.
- Fatigue – It’s normal for viral infections to cause fatigue. In bronchitis, you may feel extremely tired or weak because of coughing so hard for prolonged periods.
- Shortness of breath – When your bronchi are inflamed, it could cause various problems with your breathing, such as shortness of breath and wheezing.
- Fever and chills – Severe bronchitis may cause your body temperature to increase to 100 to 102˚F (37.78 to 38.89˚C). 3 The fever may last between three and five days, even if you already started taking antibiotics.
The two types of bronchitis
- Acute Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis typically develops after you get an upper respiratory infection, such as the flu and common cold. It’s not considered a serious medical condition. The infection will start to improve within 7 to 21 days, although the cough may take several weeks to go away. In some cases, the infection could last up to 90 days. 4
Antibiotics don’t usually help treat acute bronchitis, especially if you don’t have other health problems. Instead, your doctor may prescribe a painkiller, cough suppressant, and bronchodilator (a medicine for opening your airways). It also helps if you increase your fluid intake, get enough rest, and use a humidifier (to prevent your airway from drying, which could lead to irritation).
- Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a serious medical condition. It’s a form of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) that keeps coming back and doesn’t go away permanently. It could last for at least 3 months, with recurrent episodes for at least two consecutive years. It’s harder to manage if you’re a smoker or constantly exposed to airborne irritants, such as dust, vapors, and gases.
The treatment for chronic bronchitis will depend on the main cause. There’s no cure for it, but you can manage the symptoms.
If you’re a smoker, take important steps now to stop smoking. If you don’t smoke, reduce your exposure to secondhand smoke. Treatment of chronic bronchitis usually includes taking bronchodilator inhalers, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehab, and medications (e.g., cough suppressants, expectorants, corticosteroids, and antibiotics).
Causes of bronchitis
Bacteria, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, Bordetella pertussis, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, can cause bronchitis. However, majority of the cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses, such as the flu virus (influenza virus types A and B) and cold viruses (i.e., coronavirus, rhinovirus, and parainfluenza). 5
The viruses that cause bronchitis can spread in different ways. For instance, it could spread mainly by aerosol droplets, which are made when people with flu sneeze, cough, or talk. You could also get them if you touch infected objects (e.g., doorknob, drinking glass, or computer keyboard). Bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold, also spread in practically the same ways.
- People who have a weak immune system, such as babies, young children, elderly people, and people who are sick
- Smoking cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or tobaccos
- Constant exposure to lung irritants, such as chemical fumes, cigarette or tobacco smoke, dust, and air pollution from road traffic
- Having a heart or lung disease, upper respiratory infection (e.g., cold and flu), or other health issues
Aside from self-care measures and medical treatment, essential oils may also give you immediate relief from bronchitis symptoms. Most of these essential oils for bronchitis help by loosening chest mucus (to make it easier to cough up), reduce fever, boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, fight colds and flu, and relax your mind and body.
Here are some of the essential oils that appear to give the most relief from acute bronchitis.
Best Essential Oils for Relieving Acute Bronchitis Symptoms
Oregano Essential Oil
Out of the 40 species of oregano, the essential oil extracted from the Origanum vulgare species is considered the most therapeutic. Oregano essential oil is a must-have for those suffering from respiratory infections, such as bronchitis, for different reasons.
It’s an expectorant. 6 Therefore, it can help loosen the mucus in your lung and air passages, so you can cough it up easily. This relieves the congestion, wheezing, and coughing that are associated with bronchitis.
Use oregano essential oil to boost your immune system to lower your risk for viral or bacterial respiratory infections. 7 This essential oil works by stimulating the production and improving the function of your white blood cells, which are your body’s first line of defense.
It’s also good for reducing inflammation, whether it’s inside or outside of your body. 8 This therapeutic action of oregano essential oil might help keep inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes down.
Plus, it’s a fever reducer. 9 It works by lowering abnormally high temperature by causing you to sweat.
How to use oregano essential oil:
Oregano is available in different forms, including liquid extract, capsule, and tablet. The essential oil of oregano is considered the most potent form, so be careful when using it. According to Michelle Lynde, a clinical herbalist, the right dilution ratio for oregano essential oil is three parts of carrier oil and one part of oregano essential oil. 10
Some take one drop of oregano essential oil daily to keep their immune system working properly. Instead of the oregano herb, you can use the essential oil in your food, such as in spaghetti or pizza sauces. But before you begin using this essential oil internally, seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional first.
To treat colds and flu, put 2 to 4 drops of oregano essential oil in a bowl of steaming (non-scalding) water. Place a towel over your head, and then bend your head over the bowl and close your eyes. Inhale deeply for several minutes.
Use oregano essential oil carefully when inhaling or diffusing it because it contains phenols, which are potent antioxidants. Small amounts will be enough. If you’re going to use it for your skin, dilute it with a mild carrier oil.
Avoid using oregano essential oil if:
- You have health issues, such as a high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease
- You’re allergic to lavender, sage, marjoram, mint, or basil
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Feeling a little feverish? Eucalyptus essential oil might help. This essential oil is also known as the “fever oil.” This is due to its ability to reduce body temperature and treat fever. 11
Eucalyptus essential oil is a great addition to any medicines for respiratory problems because of its anti-inflammatory, decongestant, antiviral, anti-spasm, and antibacterial properties. 12 Eucalyptus radiata (Narrow-Leaved Eucalyptus) consists of alpha-terpineol and eucalyptol, which can open your air passages and allow you to breathe better. 13
A study published in the journal Respiratory Research suggests that cineole, one of the main chemical compounds of eucalyptus essential oil, can control and reduce the inflammation of the airways. 14 Cineole can also improve your lung function, while improving your shortness of breath and reducing exacerbations.
In another study, a Bonn University Hospital researcher discovered that cineole in eucalyptus essential oil can be a long-term treatment for controlling the symptoms of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). 15 As I mentioned earlier, chronic bronchitis is one main form of COPD. Thus, eucalyptus essential oil might be an effective long-term treatment for bronchitis.
How to use eucalyptus essential oil:
If you’re experiencing a slight fever, just add 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, 10 drops of peppermint essential oil, and 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin in 8 ounces of cool water. Dip a washcloth into the mixture, and then place it on your forehead.
You can also put 3 to 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into your diffuser before going to bed if your phlegm is too thick. Run your diffuser overnight to take advantage of its full therapeutic benefits.
Eucalyptus essential oil is generally safe, but it does have a few risks that you need to consider:
- Don’t take this by mouth. It could poison you, especially if you take 3.5 ml (less than a teaspoon) or more of the undiluted form of this essential oil. These are the signs and symptoms of eucalyptus essential oil poisoning: weakness of the muscles, feelings of choking or can’t breathe, dizziness, constricted eye pupils, and burning or painful sensation in the stomach.
- Don’t use this on young children. Applying this essential oil on their skin may cause wheezing, apnea (temporary stopping of breathing during sleep), and asthma-like symptoms.
- According to the S. National Institutes of Health, eucalyptus essential oil can cause excessive sleepiness and increase the absorption of 5-FU (Fluorouracil) drug. Don’t use this if you’re taking sedatives.
Frankincense Essential Oil
For thousands of years, frankincense essential oil has been used in traditional herbal medicine and aromatherapy because of its effective healing properties. Inhale or diffuse it in your room whenever you’re stressed or anxious. This “king of all essential oils” has a spicy, woody, earthy, and fruity fragrance that’s very calming and relaxing.
Frankincense essential oil has immune system-boosting properties. This is largely due to its ability to help in fighting potentially harmful microscopic organisms, such as viruses and bacteria. 16
Studies have also shown that this essential oil is a good anti-inflammatory agent. It’s especially helpful in reducing inflammation associated with asthma, arthritis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). 17 With its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, it can ease inflammation and breaks up the phlegm deposited in your lungs and air passages. As a result, it can potentially relieve the congestion, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath that are linked with bronchitis.
How to use frankincense essential oil:
Because it has disinfectant and antiviral properties, you can use it as a replacement for chemical-based household cleaners and air fresheners. To make your own natural air freshener, simply mix 4 ounces (½ cup) of distilled water, 4 ounces (½ cup) of emulsifier (e.g., vinegar, vodka, and rubbing alcohol), 15 drops of frankincense essential oil, and 5 drops of lime essential oil in a spray bottle. Use this to keep the air in your home fresh and free from flu or cold-causing germs.
When ingesting frankincense essential oil, dilute 1 drop of the essential oil in an edible carrier oil (e.g., coconut oil and olive oil), honey, or non-dairy, non-acidic drinks. As always, speak with your doctor before taking essential oils internally to prevent serious complications.
For nasal and chest congestion: Combine 3 drops of frankincense essential oil, 3 drops of lavender essential oil, and 2 drops of lemon essential oil in a bowl or pot of steaming, non-scalding water. Inhale deeply the vapors for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this as necessary.
These essential oils (frankincense, lavender, and lemon) will help thin and break up mucus in your air passages and lungs, so it’s easier to cough up and to improve your breathing.
There are no serious side effects associated with the use of frankincense essential oil. Although they rarely happen, it might cause hyperacidity, nausea, upset stomach, and mild skin rash.
It’s best for the following people to avoid using frankincense essential oil:
- Young children, especially those below 6 years old
- Women who are pregnant (or planning to get pregnant) and breastfeeding
- People who have blood clotting disorders and are taking blood thinners
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is regarded as one of the oldest and highly valued herbs today. It seems there’s little it can’t do when supporting our mental and physical health. Just inhaling the potent minty aroma of peppermint essential oil has been shown to boost energy, alertness, memory, and mood.
Peppermint essential oil has high menthol content (34.29%). 18 Menthol, which gives peppermint its distinct cooling sensation and minty aroma, is beneficial for the lungs and upper airways. That’s why peppermint essential oil is a common ingredient in many nonprescription oral and topical medicines for upper and lower respiratory problems, such as the common cold, asthma, and sinusitis. The advantage of peppermint essential oil over nonprescription medicines for respiratory problems is it doesn’t cause excessive sleepiness and other common side effects. 19
When inhaled, menthol temporarily alleviates chest congestion, wheezing, and shortness of breath by thinning the mucus that clogs your lungs and airways. This makes it easier for you to expel the mucus through coughing.
How to use peppermint essential oil:
To reduce the symptoms of bronchitis, make this homemade vapor rub: Melt 2 tablespoons of white beeswax using a double boiler. Add 4 ounces of coconut oil. Stir well. Remove from heat then add 10-15 drops each of peppermint essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil.
Peppermint essential oil can also reduce a fever, particularly in children, because of its cooling effect. You can add a few drops to a bowl of cool water. Or, mix 2-5 drops of peppermint essential oil with 2-3 teaspoons of mild carrier. Then, gently massage the mixture on your neck, the middle of each of your fingertip, and the bottom of your feet.
Like with other essential oils, use peppermint essential oil in small amounts. Some of the side effects of this essential oil are nausea, vomiting, seizure, abdominal pain, and breathing issues.
Always check with your doctor before taking peppermint essential oil internally. There’s no standard dose for oral supplements containing this essential oil. However, Examine.com suggests a maximum daily dose of 450 mg-750 mg in 2-3 divided doses. 20
Peppermint essential oil might not be safe for:
- People who have stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), and other digestive-related issues
- People with high blood sugar levels
- Young children under 7 years old
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
Lavender Essential Oil
Having trouble sleeping at night due to uncontrollable coughing? Inhale lavender essential oil. You can also put a few drops on your pillow. The floral, herb-like, and sweet aroma of this essential oil can help you fall asleep faster and have a restful night because of its relaxing and sedative properties.
The vapor of lavender essential oil has antibacterial action. 21 In a Russian study published in the journal Vrachebnoe Delo, patients with chronic bronchitis inhaled lavender essential oil or other essential oils for 30 minutes for every session. (There were four sessions.) Results showed that inhaling lavender essential oil together with other essential oils can be an effective treatment for chronic bronchitis. 22
Lavender essential oil is also an anti-inflammatory and painkiller. 23 As an anti-inflammatory, lavender essential oil can help reduce the inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, decreasing the production of excessive mucus in your lungs.
This essential oil is not only good for treating the symptoms of bronchitis. It’s also widely used for other respiratory diseases, such as the flu, cold, laryngitis (inflamed vocal cords), throat infection, and tonsillitis (inflamed tonsils). 24
How to use lavender essential oil:
The simplest way to use lavender essential oil for treating respiratory infections is through inhalation therapy. Just add 3-4 drops of this essential oil to your diffuser, vaporizer, or a bowl of steaming water. Inhale deeply for 30 minutes, twice or thrice daily.
You could also try this blend: dilute 5 drops of lavender essential oil, 5 drops of tea tree oil, and 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil (not for children under 10 years old) in 6 teaspoons of carrier oil (e.g., coconut oil, almond oil, and olive oil).
Lavender essential oil is one of the gentlest essential oils out there. In rare instances, it could cause vomiting, nausea, and head pain. Ingestion of this essential oil could lead to blurry vision, stinging sensation in the eyes, diarrhea, and breath problems.
The following should use with caution or completely avoid using lavender essential oil:
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have blood sugar problems
- Pre-puberty boys (because it could abnormal breast growth)
- People who have medical conditions affecting their hormones
- People who have allergies and highly sensitive skin
Thyme Essential Oil
While annoying, coughing is an important defense mechanism of the body. It helps clear your airways and lungs of irritating secretions (phlegm and sputum), especially when you have bronchitis. However, persistent coughing could lead to fatigue, weakness, and poor appetite.
Thyme essential oil is a German Commission E-approved treatment for whooping cough, bronchitis, and inflammation of the upper airways. 25 As an antispasmodic, it can stop spasms that may cause persistent coughing. It also makes it easier to cough up the accumulated mucus from your airways and lungs because of its expectorant properties. 26
The health benefits of thyme essential oil are attributed to its major chemical compounds, thymol, para-cymene, and gamma-terpinene. 27 These compounds have been shown to fight inflammation, bacteria, and fungi. Researchers discovered that out of the six essential oils they tested, it was thyme essential oil that effectively reduced inflammation by up to 75 percent. 28 This was due to its main chemical compound, thymol.
How to use thyme essential oil:
Inhalation therapy: Add 2-5 drops of thyme essential oil to a cup or small bowl of hot water. Inhale deeply for 5-10 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
To relieve bronchitis symptoms, try this non-drowsy chest rub blend: Dilute 5 drops of thyme essential oil, 5 drops of peppermint essential oil, and 2 drops of basil essential oil in 5 teaspoons of carrier oil. Rub on your chest, neck, and back for cough and breathing relief, without feeling sleepy.
Thyme essential oil can be safe if you use it properly. However, it also has side effects that you should consider, such as skin irritation, vomiting, and dizziness.
This essential oil is contraindicated in:
- Babies and younger children (6 years old and below)
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- People who are allergic to lavender, sage, rosemary, and basil
- People who have hypertension, slow heart rate, thyroid problems, indigestion, stomach ulcers, and gastritis (inflamed stomach lining)
Marjoram Essential Oil
The essential oil is extracted from the Origanum majorana herb, commonly called sweet marjoram. The smell of this essential oil is often described as spicy, woody, and camphorous. Take a few whiffs of this essential oil to relieve stress and calm your mind and body.
Marjoram essential oil is good for promoting a healthy respiratory system. In fact, it’s often used for treating cough and a runny nose. 29
Since it’s an expectorant, it can get rid of germy mucus in your lungs, nose, sinuses, and air passages due to colds and viral infections. 30 This is especially effective for lingering cough, thanks to its antispasmodic properties. Like with other essential oils that have high levels of linalool and terpinen-4-ol, marjoram essential oil is also an excellent inflammation-reducing agent. 31
Taking marjoram essential oil by mouth may also support a healthy immune system. DoTerra.com suggests adding a drop of the essential oil in 4 fluid ounces of any non-acidic, non-dairy drink. 32 You can also put a few drops in a veggie capsule. (A size 0 veggie capsule can hold around 10 drops of essential oil).
How to use marjoram essential oil:
The easiest way to relieve bronchitis symptoms using marjoram essential oil is through vapor therapy. Try this blend for congestion and cough relief: Add 3 drops of marjoram essential oil, 3 drops of rosemary essential oil, and 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to your diffuser or a bowl of steaming water. Inhale the vapors deeply and slowly for 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
Long-term use of marjoram essential oil may not be safe because of the potential risk of cancer. Always consult your doctor before adding this to your bronchitis treatment plan.
This should not be used if you have the following medical conditions:
- Bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia
- A heart rate that’s less than 60 beats per minute
- Sensitive skin or allergies, especially to sage, mint, lavender, and basil
- Urinary tract obstruction
Basil Essential Oil
The essential oil of basil is a must-have if you’re recovering from an illness. Apply it on your neck, temples, and back to refresh your mind and body. The linalool in basil essential oil enhances its ability to calm your senses and uplift your mood when diffused. 33
The leaves of the Ocimum basilicum plant has been used for hundreds of years for treating chest infections and migraines. 34 That’s why basil essential oil is used today as an effective treatment for the common cold and flu. In some cases, people will develop acute bronchitis soon after they recover from a common upper respiratory tract infection. To make it even more potent, combine it with fir, rosemary, and eucalyptus essential oils.
How to use basil essential oil:
Topical: Add 6 teaspoons of coconut oil to 2 tablespoons of melted beeswax. Allow cooling a little before adding 5-8 drops each of basil essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, and peppermint essential oil. Transfer to a dark-colored glass jar then store in a cool, dark place.
Aromatically: Diffuse it throughout your home to prevent or treat respiratory infections. Add equal parts of basil essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and peppermint essential oil into your diffuser or vaporizer. Inhale deeply and slowly.
Basil essential oil is Generally Recognized as Safe, or GRAS, in standard amounts. This means you can add it to food products and is safe for consumption. However, before you take it internally, consult your doctor first. An overdose of this essential oil could cause an increased heart rate (greater than 100 beats per minute), dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, and convulsion.
Because it contains methyl chavicol, it may irritate the skin of some susceptible individuals. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid the essential oil or any product containing it.
When You Should See Your Doctor
These are just a few essential oils that you could use to alleviate the symptoms of acute bronchitis. Although they can be effective when used properly, they’re not meant to replace standard medical treatment for bronchitis. Before you use these essential oils internally and externally, consult your doctor first.
When should you seek immediate medical attention? According to WebMD.com, make an appointment to see your doctor if your cough:
- Doesn’t go away after 4-6 weeks from diagnosis
- Brings up thick, dark, and/or bloody mucus
- Makes it hard for you to talk
- Sounds like a dog barking
- Prevents you from sleeping at night
- Causes you to lose weight
